The story is beautifully described, letting the reader in on the main character's emotions and doubts. The connection of past and present through half-finished letters put in between the actual storyline gives the book a special appeal. One of my favorites I would recommend to anyone who likes to read.

Such a beautiful, honest book. I loved every page of it. Annie enchanted me, too! I'd recommend this book to any compassionate reader.

Nancy Garden's ANNIE ON MY MIND, originally published in 1982, was recently re-released. (It includes an interview with the author herself.)The book represents an early example of realistic young adult fiction depicting a lesbian relationship between two high school seniors. It is still a fitting portrayal for today's teens.Liza and Annie meet in a New York museum and develop a fast friendship. Both seem to realize there is something different about their relationship, but admitting that at the start is difficult for both. The story is told as Annie remembers it, and focuses mostly on her struggle to accept the facts she is learning about herself. The book's first half takes the reader into the growing friendship between the girls. There is considerable time spent describing how they discover their common interests and the activities they find to spend time together. The girls come from different backgrounds - Liza attends a relatively sheltered, private school currently struggling with financial difficulties, while Annie attends public school and is faced with drugs, violence, and other social problems public schools must deal with both then and now.As the girls' relationship develops, the plot becomes more involved in Liza's role as student council president and her school's struggle with a fund-raising campaign. Liza and Annie begin to accept the true direction of their friendship, and of course, as other people become aware, controversy surfaces. Will the admission of their gay lifestyle cause acceptance or abandonment by family and friends? Could their situation adversely affect a similar relationship between two teachers in Liza's private school?ANNIE ON MY MIND delves into the acceptance of homosexuality. It seems there will always be two sides to this controversy, but the re-release of the book may ask readers to decide if things are changing as time passes. What really matters in love - what is "right" for those involved or what is perceived as "right" by those whose views may differ?Reviewed by: Sally Kruger, aka "Readingjunky"

I'm neither American, nor lesbian, I'm an Austrian social worker, wife and mother - but I do think, like the others, that this is a very beautiful book, which shows how affection can become love and love is just love, no matter which sex the partners have. But honestly: Are American highschools really so conservative that piercing ears is a scandal and a real trial is made for these poor teenagers? I can't imagine this and I'm sure, that in most European countries, people would be more tolerant, although lesbian relationships are still a taboo for some people.

I first read this book over the summer between 8th and 9th grade. That was four years ago. At that time, I was struggling with my sexuality. I immediately fell in love with this book and I read it over and over. The experiences between Annie and Liza in the early stages of their romance were exactly what I had been dreaming about. For those of you who have not read this book, it is told alternately third-person limited and first-person, as a retrospective journey through the senior year of a young girl. Eliza, or Liza, is a thoughtful, outgoing girl who meets Annie, an introspective thinker in a museum. Through a series of events, they realize their mutual attraction, following a kiss on the beach. Their romance is mired by cover-ups and secrets, but, as they profess their love for one another in central park, they know they'll try to make it work. When Eliza has the opportunity to house-sit for two of her teachers, she invites Annie along. What follows is a story of injustice, close-mindedness, and the desire to "Know the truth and the truth will set you free". This book has inspired me to seek the truth, and it has been an experience I will not soon forget. I recommend this book to everyone and anyone. You cannot leave your teens without having read this book. and i

This book would have made my high school years much, much easier. I can relate to Liza so well. I didn't know I was a lesbian until I fell for a woman in college. I don't know how realistic the school situation is (with Liza essentially being on trial for her relationship with Annie) but I focused on the depiction of Liza's coming to terms with her sexuality. Trust me, Garden is right on. I am a bit older than the intended audience (21), but I feel qualified to say that this book is suitable reading for high school students. There is no reason to closet the issue of homosexuality. It's out there, not going anywhere, so why not introduce a loving, stable relationship?
